As you cook, shower, or do laundry, you release moisture into your house. In the winter, this moisture can rise with the air as you heat your home and get into your attic if not controlled. Your attic space is colder than the rest of your home so this moisture can freeze on the underside of the roof and create attic frost. When spring arrives the frost melts and causes drips inside your home. This could lead you to believe that the roof is leaking.
To avoid this issue, it’s important to run your fans when you cook and shower. However, it’s crucial to ensure that these fans are installed correctly, or you may encounter other issues. Bath fans with flex-type ribbed hoses are problematic because the ribs trap moisture. The trapped moisture makes it more difficult for air to pass through and causes mold, mildew, and even leaks that add to attic frost issues. Also, if the installer leaves too much extra length of the ribbed hose, it creates a longer tunnel for the air and moisture to go through, leading to smelly, dirty water buildup that can cause leaks.
Instead, straight pipe should be used and installed properly. The pipe should be installed vertically up to the attic space before being directed down at an angle to exit the home. This way, the water must leave the pipe and cannot be trapped, making the fan more efficient.
Always ensure that you use a licensed and insured contractor for attic frost and other issues that affect your home. Also, educating yourself on these types of problems helps to avoid paying for a solution that doesn’t solve the problem. These issues can occur in new homes too, so it’s important to know what to look for. Your home is a significant investment, and you should want to keep it comfortable and long-lasting for years to come.
