Your windows are an important part of your home and we would like to give you tips on how to detect if your windows are rotted. If you have damaged or moist wood, glass that is foggy or broken hardware – these can all take away from the look and feel of your home and can have a negative impact on the value of your home. If some of these issues are left without attention, they can lead to expensive home repairs from structural damage. The bad news is, by the time you discover problems, it is likely your home has sustained some damage from window rot.
Most likely signs of window decay and leaks:
You may observe discoloration as yellowing or fading at first. If moisture is not addressed and allowed to seep in, the stains could get darker over time. Attempting to clean the stains or painting over them would just be treating the symptom and not the cause. Interior condensation is one thing, but there could be a much larger water issue.
If you observe peeling or bubbling paint or wallpaper, it means that moisture has moved outward from the window frame. When drywall gets wet the paint or wallpaper will lose its adhesion and start to pull away and for paint as the leak dries up it will start to flake off.
Wet building materials will create a distinct smell. While it may be a familiar smell from some unproperly constructed basements, it’s not a smell you want in your home. This is a telltale sign of latent moisture and you will want to identify the source in order to take care of the issue.
If drywall becomes soaked with water, it will soften and start to sag. After some time, the entire sheet will buckle, warp and cave. It is obviously best to resolve the problem with the leak before the effects reach this point.
Water always wants to flow to the lowest point – which unfortunately includes flooring. Look for peeling, warping or separating and correct it immediately before any framing or subfloors are impacted.
Mold growth can be a health hazard and is a problem you want to address as soon you notice it. This growth is the consequence of any of the above problems not being repaired in a prompt manner.
