Your garage not only provides a space for you to safely park your vehicles, but it also has space for storage and possibly even a work area. How do you plan on using your garage? Knowing what your needs are will help you determine the size that will work best for you.
The answer to this question varies as there are no standard garage dimensions. Still, many homeowners think the answer is as simple as a “single-car”, “two-car,” or “three-car” garage.
But the dimensions for these can vary, and you certainly want to make sure whatever you build will be wide enough to get in and out and open your vehicle’s doors! Depending on the area you have to work with, a builder can offer a custom-built garage that fits your unique size and shape needs.
We like to design garages in a way that leaves 2’ of space between the vehicle and the wall on both sides of the garage and then 4’ in between each vehicle. This gives room for both vehicles to open doors at the same time. If you want to more than 2’ on the sides, you could use the extra room to put shelves on the walls.
Garage depth is often as important if not more important than width, especially if your plans include extra storage space or a work bench. The typical depth we see for garages is 26’ but that is very tight. A nice depth would be 28’-30’ with some even going to 32’ or more to add storage. The depth of a boat with a trailer tends to be in the 28’-30’ range.
For Overhead doors, we generally suggest 8’H x 10’W – this can be helpful to determine your new garage size.
